Barbara Louise Stern, 87, earned her heavenly wings on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at home surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 25, 1936, in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, to Robert and Nadine Houts, she often shared stories with her grandchildren about growing up on a farm.
She married John L. Stern on July 9, 1961, in Sterling, Illinois, where they built a beautiful life together filled with faith and service to others. After graduating from Rice Lake High School in 1955 and attending St. Olaf College, Barbara worked as a controller at Self Help Enterprises in Rock Falls. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Sterling, where she forged deep friendships and was active in the church community.
Barbara was happiest surrounded by family, cherishing every moment with her grandchildren. She was caring, witty, and had the biggest heart. She found joy in cheering for the Cubs, volunteering at Stage Two Resale Shop, cross-stitching keepsakes for her loved ones, tending her garden, and solving word finds and jigsaw puzzles. Her love for those around her was endless, and her memory will continue to bring comfort to all who knew her.
Barbara is survived by her eldest son, daughter-in-law, her treasured grandchildren, and a host of dear friends who will miss her deeply. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her youngest son, her parents, and her brother.
Barbara was laid to rest in a private ceremony at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling, IL. Memorials in her honor may be directed to Self Help Enterprises.
