STERLING- Bernice M. Grapes, 91, died peacefully Thursday, June 19, 2014, at her home in Sterling, IL. Bernice was born July 21, 1922, in North Tonawanda, NY, to William H. and Viola (Praker) Meisner. She married Stanley H. Grapes on October 15, 1947, who preceded her in death on February 7, 2004. Bernice graduated from North Tonawanda High School in 1940, Bryant & Stratton Business School in 1942, and worked at Tonawanda Iron & Steel Works until 1950. After rearing her children, she re-entered the work force in 1970 and worked in the Guidance Office at Sweet Home High School, retiring in 1985. Bernice was a life-long member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda. She was the sole-surviving member of Inter- Amicas Club, a loyal group of friends since 1938. Bernice resided in the town of Tonawanda, from 1952-2007, and then re-located to Sterling, IL. Bernice was extremely well-read, enjoyed the piano, extensive travels, playing bride and her beloved Buffalo Bills. And everyone loved her pies. Her primary focus, however, always remained with her family. She will be greatly missed. Bernice is survived by her children, Jonathan (Elizabeth) Grapes, Thomas (Paula) Grapes, and Martha (John) Benson; and her grandchildren, Christopher Grapes, Mary (Shad) Gregory, Philip Grapes, Michael (Nichole) Grapes, Molly (Trevor) Wiggins, Sarah (Clyde) Anglim, Margaret Benson and Ellen Benson, and cousin Walter("Bud") Witte and his wife Pat. Services will be held at Wattengel Funeral Home, North Tonawanda, NY, with internment at Acacia Park & Resthaven Cemetery, North Tanawanda, NY.
