EDGAR T. MATTHEWS STERLING - Edgar T. Matthews, 82, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. He worked in the steel industry his entire life, coming to Sterling in 1981 to work in sales and management at the former Northwestern Steel and Wire Company, until his retirement. Edgar was born May 24, 1930 in Owensboro, KY, the son of Clell and Zetta (Sarver) Matthews. Edgar was a graduate of Peru High School, Class of 1949, Indiana University School of Business and United States Naval School. He served in the United States Navy commissioned out of Norfolk. He married Elise Wrigley on August 2, 1953 in Peru, IN. Edgar was a member of First Congregational Church of Sterling. Survivors include his wife, Elise; one daughter, Sara (John) Blessent of Bloomington; two sons, Jeff Matthews of Hanover, IN and Alan (Cara) Matthews of Hopkins, MI; two sisters, Reba Reed of Kokomo, IN and Ann (Kris) Schultz of Olivenhain, CA; one brother Jim (Carole) Matthews of San Marcos, CA and two grandchildren, Anna and Sam Matthews. He was preceded in death by three brothers; Leonard, Russell and Joseph Matthews. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the First Congregational Church of Sterling, with Reverend Jeff Coester, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be from 3-5PM Monday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling. A memorial has been established to CGH Foundation.
