STERLING- Gumesindo “Gume” Sandoval, 78, of Sterling,passed away Monday, May 7, 2018 at CGH Medical Center, Sterling. Gumesindo was born in Edinburg, TX on January 13, 1940 the son of Guadalupe and Maria DeJesus (Pena) Sandoval. He served in the United States Army. He married Celia “Sally” Gonzalez on March 23, 1961 in Morrison. Gume was employed at North Western Steel & Wire for 36 years until his retirement in 1999. He coached youth baseball for 25 years, and a member of the Twin City Educational Scholarship. Gume was a former Latin American Club “Don”. He was a loyal Cubs fan and enjoyed all sports including golf. Gume enjoyed spending time with family especially on Sandoval Sundays. Gume was afflicted with Parkinson's disease for 34 years and has participated in numerous studies to advance research. In the end he was an organ donor to promote finding a cure for Parkinson's. Survivors include his wife Celia “Sally” Sandoval of Sterling; four daughters, Angela (Joe ) Lopez, Theresa (Lazaro) Sifuentes, Marcella Sandoval and Denise Sandoval, all of Sterling; one son, John (Elizabeth Burn) Sandoval of Houston, TX; one brother, Felimon Sandoval of Sterling; three sisters, Paula Cantu of Weslaco, TX, Maria (Mucio) Marquez of Yuma, AZ and Estella (Manuel) Tejeda of Rockford; ten grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Francisca Camacho and Josephine Lira and Paula Tejerina; four brothers, Guadalupe, Lucas, Reynaldo and Eliborio Sandoval. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10AM Thursday, May 10, 2018, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Sterling,with Reverend Adalberto Sanchez officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 PM at the Schilling Funeral Home and Cremation Sterling. A memorial has been established.
