LAUREN EARL YOUNG STERLING - Lauren Earl Young, 85, died Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at his home. Lauren was born August 6, 1926 in Clinton, IA, the son of Earl W. and Viola (Marcy) Young. He was raised in Garden Plain Township, attended Cedar Creek Grade School and was a 1944 graduate of Erie High School. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. Lauren was a Seaman 1st Class in Submarine Division 262 on the USS SeaDevil submarine. He returned home from the service and began farming north of Sterling in Jordan Township. On October 7, 1951, he married Betty Lou Leseman at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sterling. Lauren and his wife farmed until 1997. In 1966, he received an Honorary Chapter Farmers Degree from the SHS Chapter of FFA. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post 190, Clinton, IA since 1950. In the past, he served as Republican Precinct Committeeman of Jordan Township, Supervisor and Town Clerk of Jordan Township and a member for several years of the Whiteside County Board of Supervisors District I. He also served as Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer of Whiteside County Livestock Feeders Association, now known as Cattleman's Association. He was Chairman and served on the Whiteside County Extension Council. He was also the Chairman of the Whiteside County Beef Carcass Shows and served on the Sterling Co-op Board and also served as Chairman on many county board committees including Law Enforcement and Building, etc. Lauren kept his interest in farming after retirement and spent time at their summer cottage on the Mississippi with family and friends, especially his five grandchildren. He enjoyed reading and gardening. Survivors include his wife, Betty; three sons, Barry (Donna) Young, Kris (Amy) Young and Jim Bob Young, all of Sterling; one granddaughter, Lindsay Young, of Rochester, MN; four grandsons, Bryce of Dixon, Chad, Lauren and Adam Young, of Sterling; one great-granddaughter; one sister-in-law, Louise Young, of Pensacola, FL; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Herbert Young. Services will be held at 12 PM, Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Schilling Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Judd, of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Knoll Memorial Park, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 am-12 pm, Saturday at the Funeral Home, prior to services. A memorial has been established.
