Mary Kathleen Knowles

   Mary Kathleen “Kate” Knowles, age 80, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2025, in Sterling, IL.

   Kate was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who touched countless lives with her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to family and education. 

   She is survived by her loving children, Kelly (Calvin) Williams and John (Ilene) Knowles IV; her cherished grandchildren, Briauna (Dave) Skrzypiec and Johnny Knowles V; and her adored great-grandchildren, Eliana and Julian Skrzypiec. She also leaves behind her sisters, Marta Vasquez, Jean (George) Ransom, and Barb (Joe) Hermes, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who held a special place in her heart.

   She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John V. Knowles III; her parents, Helen Hermes (Kobbeman) Lawrence Burke; her brothers, Larry and David Burke; and her brother-in-law, Lorenzo Vasquez.

   Kate had a deep passion for storytelling, education, and the great outdoors. Alongside her husband, she dedicated much of her life to fostering children, ensuring they received not only a strong education but also a loving and supportive home. Her love of books led her to a fulfilling career as a reading teacher, where she inspired countless children in the greater St. Louis, MO area to embrace the magic of learning.

   To honor her lifelong commitment to education and literacy, a memorial will be established in her name to support children and reading programs.

   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at Sacred Heart Church in Sterling, IL, followed by a luncheon and burial at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.
