MELVIN HENRY HAAK POLO- Melvin Henry Haak, 89, of Polo, died Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Serenity Home and Hospice, Oregon. He was an Auctioneer in the area for many years. Melvin was born December 2, 1922 in Sterling, the son of Emil and Lizzie (Zook) Haak. He served in the United States Civil Air Patrol during World War II, belonged to Troop #74 which was the oldest boy scout troop in America, IL. He was a member of the Auctioneer Association, American Murray Grey Association, He also served many years on school boards of Jordan and Sterling. He married Elaine Hummel on August 12, 1945 at East Jordan Church, where he was a lifetime member. Survivors include his wife, Elaine; two daughters, Melanie Rude of Hyattsville, Maryland and Melissa Haak of Polo; one son, Martin ( Mally Olson) Haak of Polo; one sister, Arlene Copenhaver of Deerfield; three grandchildren, Abby, Katie and Emma Haak; and five great-grandchildren; Jasmyn, Sidney and Cole Anderson, Henry Haak and Lillia Guthrie. He was preceded in death by six sisters, Kathryn Person, Helen Ogata, Lidia Lambert, Marian Haak, Betsy Meisel and Evelyn Saunders and three brothers, Eugene, Richard and Edwin Haak. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at East Jordan Church, Sterling with Pastor Fritz Bartels, officiating. Burial will be at the East Jordan Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7PM Tuesday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling. A memorial has been established. Condolences may be sent to www.schillingfuneralhome.com.
