OLIVER W. TAYLOR STERLING- Oliver Taylor, 92, died Sunday July 3, 2011 at CGH Medical Center. Oliver was born February 26, 1919 in Sterling the son of Oliver W. and Irma Petty Taylor. He married Sarah Petersen on February 25, 1951 in Wilmington, NC. She preceded him in death on November 19, 2003. Oliver was a member of the United States Marine Corps serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was in the Fifth Division and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Sterling American Legion Post 296, U.S. Marine Corp Fifth Division Association and the Sauk Valley Marine Corp Detachment. Oliver was an avid sports fan, enjoyed playing pinochle at the Senior Center and listening to patriotic music and songs from the Big Band era. Survivors include three sons; Ward (Ruth) Taylor of Moundsview MN, Kent Taylor of Moline and Mark (Sharon) Taylor of Sterling, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and one sister in-law Marie Taylor of Sterling; He was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Thursday July 7, 2011 at the Schilling Funeral Home with Reverend Nancy Weingartner pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM at Schilling Funeral Home. A Memorial has been established in his memory. "He embodied the greatest generation. He grew up in the great depression, served in WWII, didn't take anything for granted and believed that hard work would carry the day" said his son Mark.
