VERLA MAY BURGER STERLING - Verla May Burger, 81, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center in Prophetstown. Verla was born January 22, 1930 in Fayette, IA, the daughter of Amos Harold and Mabel May (Starr) Burger. Verla was a member of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sterling. She attended school in Fayette, IA and Sterling, graduating from Sterling High School in 1947. She first worked at Prince Ice Cream Castle, becoming the executive secretary for the corporate offices until their closing. She later worked as a secretary for Rod Copeland Attorney at Law in Prophetstown before retiring. Verla enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling across the United States. She loved attending her nieces and nephews' sporting events. Survivors include one sister, Wilma Mechling, of Sun City, AZ; one brother, Loren (Carol) Burger, of Sellersburg, IN; one brother-in-law, Dick Mulnix, of Rock Falls; six nieces, Janice (Roger Adams) Mewhirter, Shirley (Steve) Genz, Debbie (George) Pinkney, Susan (Curtis) Utz, Sandee (Kevin) Fackler and Cathy (Joe) Dane; six nephews, Jack (Karyn) Mulnix, Cliff Mulnix, Larry (Tracy) Albright, Wesley (Leslie) Burger, Tom Burger and Scott (Casey) Blair; many great and great-great nieces and nephews; and family friend, Karen Voss, of Rock Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Carole Mulnix; one brother, Philip Burger; and longtime friend, Bernice "Bunny" Voss. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, October 24, 2011 at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sterling with Reverend Patrick Pinion of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church and Reverend Daniel Behmlander of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, co-officiating. Burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery in Fayette, IA. Visitation will be from 2-4 PM, Sunday, October 23, 2011 at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling. A memorial has been established.
