It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dearly loved father and Papa, Vern D. Jacobs, 98, of Lake Thunderbird, Putnam, IL on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024 with his loving family by his side. Vern was born on October 29th, 1926 in Alabama, New York to Floyd and Minnie (Foss) Jacobs. He was the youngest of 4 children. At the age of 17, directly out of high school, Vern served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a very curious man with an incredible desire to learn. Through the G.I. Bill, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Florida Southern College, and then went on to receive his Master’s degree in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University in 1956. Vern took Senior Education courses at Bradley University and enjoyed several more courses and traveling through the Elderhostel Program.
On November 17th, 1954, he married his loving wife, Rose Marie. He was blessed to have shared 35 wonderful years with Rose until her passing on July 6th, 1989. Vern came to Lake Thunderbird in 1994 as a full-time resident. He was an active volunteer while still able to enjoy his swimming and bike riding. He served as an adult water exercise leader for 20 years at the Lake Thunderbird’s clubhouse and was an amazing yet stern teacher. Vern was also a member of the American Legion Post 323 in Henry, Illinois.
Surviving are his dear children: Joanie Jacobs Buhmann of Lake Thunderbird, IL, Patricia Ann (Charles, deceased) Newman of Grand Rapids, MI, and Jill Beth (Thomas) Foster of Lockport, IL. As well as his loving grandchildren: (Nicole, deceased), Jacob, and Julia Rose and great grandchildren: Caleb, Brady, and Connor.
Memorial service will be held from 1pm-4pm on Saturday, January 25th, 2025 at the Lake Thunderbird Clubhouse in Putnam, IL. Final resting place for Vern will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL at a later date.
The family extends our heartfelt thanks to his healthcare team at OSF Saint Clare Medical Center for their outstanding, compassionate, and thorough care and support. He touched the hearts of everyone that was lucky enough to meet him and will be so dearly missed. He truly was a special man and made everyone around him feel special too. We can find comfort in knowing that he will always be watching over us.
Any donations can be made to the family and will be distributed at a later date per Vern’s wishes.
