STERLING- John “Johnnie” Garrison, 90, passed away, Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at Regency Care of Sterling. John was born June 29, 1929 in Bayou Meto, Arkansas to William and Hallie (Scott) Garrison, the youngest of twelve children. He served two years during WWII in the United States Army, enlisting at age seventeen, serving in Tokyo, Japan. After retiring from the service John worked different jobs, including working on the Great Lakes freighters. He married Sandra Gill in Arkansas. He later married Luella (Hartman) Disher on June 14, 1968, in Clinton, IA at Zion Lutheran Church. John and Luella traveled throughout the United States to Bluegrass and country music festivals and airshows. He was an avid walker. He worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire Company for thirty-one years, retiring as a bricklayer in 1991 Survivors include his wife, Luella; daughter Johnette Gifford of Dixon; two stepdaughters, Jacquelyn Fecht and Lori Alvarez, both of Sterling; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a step-son, Jeffrey Disher; son-in-law. Ron Gifford; his parents and eleven brothers and sisters. A private family burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Sterling. John’s family wishes to thank Regency Care, Vitas Hospice and the Veterans Administration in Iowa City and Sterling for the wonderful care he received.
