Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Doris E. Swanson: Born February 1, 1921 - Died: May 19, 2020. Doris was born in Dover, IL to LeRoy and Alverda Fundell and grew-up in Bureau County. During WWII she worked at Green River Ammunition Depot. Doris married Fred H. Swanson in December 1944 and moved to Mendota, where Fred was assistant cashier in the First State Bank. After eight years they and their three children moved to Lanark where Fred was with the Exchange State Bank. Doris and Fred and children moved back to Mendota where Fred was a vice president with the First State Bank. Doris became a cook at Mendota High School and was known as the “baker lady” because of her delicious desserts. Doris and Fred were very active in the United Methodist Church and various community organizations. After they retired, Doris and Fred moved to Camdenton, Missouri at Lake of the Ozarks. Here they enjoyed fishing, volunteering at the regional hospital and numerous craft projects. Fred died in 2003 and Doris continued to live in Camdenton being active in church and doing craft projects. In 2009, Doris moved back to Sterling and lived at Parkway Center until her death. Her 98th birthday was celebrated in February 2019 with four generations of family and many friends at a special luncheon at the Red Barn Restaurant in Sterling. Her 99th birthday was quietly celebrated with just a few family members because she was “slowing-down”- as she would say. Doris is survived by two sons, Gordon Swanson and Kevin (Beatrice) Swanson; one daughter, Diana (Burdette) Wehmeyer; twelve grandchildren, Nicole, Jennifer, Holly, Terri, Amy, Alexander, Amber, Damien, Vanessa, Adrian, Justin and Ryan and many great grandchildren. Doris is the last of her siblings. Preceding her in death are, two brothers, Roger and Arvid “Shorty” Fundall and two sisters, Arlene King and Phyllis Casford. Arrangements were completed by Schilling Funeral Home and Cremation, Sterling, IL. A memorial has been established. Memorials may be sent to Schilling Funeral Home P.O. Box 592 Sterling, IL 61081 and will be forwarded to the family. Condolences may be sent to www.schillingfuneralhome.com.
