Obituary of Joy Behrens

GALESBURG- Joy Katherine Behrens, 71, of Galesburg, died Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg. Joy was born September 4, 1949 in Sterling, the daughter of Mason E. and Twila R. (Shaw) Behrens. Joy was very active in her church, First Lutheran Church Of Galesburg. Her generosity was felt by many organizations and groups. Kiwanis of Galesburg, Fish of Galesburg, Behrens Family Endowment of Augustana College, Mason E. Behrens Mortuary Science Scholarship of Carl Sandburg College, and the Retired Teachers Association of Knox County. She is survived by three nieces, Christine Sue (Darrel) Swapp, Shelley Lynn (Morgan) Clay and Tania Michelle (Mina) Herrera, several cousins and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, David E. Behrens and nephew, Jerry Lee Behrens. Graveside services will be held 11 AM Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at Riverside Cemetery, Sterling with Pam Marolla, of First Lutheran Church of Galesburg officiating, and Leo Patterson of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sterling co-officiating. A memorial has been established to the Mason Behrens Mortuary Science Program at Carl Sandburg College and Galesburg, and FISH Pantry of Galesburg, providing food for those in need.
