Obituary of Glenn Hoffman

Glenn Frederick Hoffman, 94, of Sterling, Illinois, passed away on September 18, 2014 at home. Services will be Sunday, September 21, 2014 at 3 PM at Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling, with Reverend John Kermott, Pastor of First Baptist Church in Sterling officiating. Visitation will be from 1 PM to 3 PM prior to the service. Graveside service will be held Monday, September 22, 2014 at 9 AM at Oak Knoll Cemetery, Sterling. Glenn was born November 30, 1919, in Battle Creek, Iowa, to Frederick and Hannah (Sengelman) Hoffman. He attended elementary school in Iowa and graduated from high school in Mountain Grove, Missouri, where his family had moved in 1936. While in high school he was a member of several choirs including a quartet which performed often on a local radio station. Glenn moved to Sterling, Illinois in 1939 seeking employment and worked in the area in various jobs including Green River Ordinance before WWII. When war broke out, he joined the Merchant Marines. After the war, Glenn married Garnett Kosier of Sterling on October 27, 1946 at the First Baptist Church. Glenn and Garnett raised three children. Garnett passed away on June 14, 2000. Glenn joined General Electric Company in its Morrison, Illinois facility in 1949 and worked there 35 years as a manufacturing engineer. He retired December 31, 1994. He was a self taught musician and played several instruments, including guitar, accordion, piano and organ. He was also interested in carpentry and antique automobile restoration. His restored automobiles took several trophies in local competitions. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Sterling and the Rock River Restorers' Club. Survivors include his three sons and their families: Frederick and Pamela Hoffman of West Bloomfield; Michigan, Steven and Barb Hoffman of Muscatine, Iowa; James and Nancy Hoffman of West Branch, Iowa; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Glenn was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Henry, Clifford, Ferne, Ruth and Eunice. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Sterling in memory of his loving wife, Garnett Kosier Hoffman.
