CLARENCE E. YOUNT IOWA CITY, IA - Clarence E. Yount, 90, formerly of Sterling, and a current resident of Iowa City, Iowa, died peacefully from complications of cancer on Sunday, June 26, 2011 at his daughter and son-in-law's home surrounded by his family. Clarence was born April 13, 1921 in Hamilton, the son of Clyde and Gladys Yount. Clarence graduated in 1939 from Rock Falls High School. On March 18, 1944 he married Marjorie G. John in Troy, Kansas. They were married for 61 years. Clarence served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II and also for a short period in the Korean War. Clarence was a patriotic American and proud to have served his country. Clarence truly was part of "The Greatest Generation". Clarence was a member of the Sterling American Legion Post 296. Following his service commitment, he returned to Commonwealth Edison where he was employed for 41 years. Clarence loved being an active member of St. John's Luthern Church in Sterling and also of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. His favorite hobbies were carpentry, gardening, traveling, fishing, and reading. Although these hobbies were important to him, the love for his family was always top priority. He was a devoted husband for 61 years and a joy and blessing to his daughters, son-in-laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Named "Big" by his great grandchildren, he was always there to spend time with them, read to them, teach them to garden, make a project, or clap for them when they performed a song or dance. Clarence is survived by his daughters Diana (Ed) Langenau of Fernandina Beach, Florida, and Sue (Mike) Dombroski of Iowa City, Iowa; one brother, Robert (Darlene) Yount. He was blessed with five grandchildren, Erik (Christie) Langenau of Havertown, PA, David (Brenna) Langenau of Stoneham, MA, Ben (Ann) Dombroski of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Rachel (Adam) Loria of Iowa City, Iowa, and Dan Dombroski of Iowa City, IA and nine great grandchildren; Ethan, Andrew, Lauren, Derek, Daniel, Averi, Claire, Kaitlin, and Thiessen. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother, and one sister. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 30th at 10:30 am at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Reverend Leo Patterson, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Wednesday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael O'Donnell and Dr. Daniel Vaena from The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for their compassionate care. Also, a special thank you to the entire staff from Iowa City Hospice for enriching Clarence's final days. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, Iowa, 52240.
