STERLING- Hazel M. Schultz, 92, passed away in her sleep January 2, 2015 at her home at Good Neighbor Care of Sterling. She had been a lifelong resident of the Sterling area. Hazel had been employed by General Electric in Morrison for over 20 years prior to her retirement in 1986. During retirement, she volunteered her time at the Christ Lutheran School (CLS) Thrift Shop in Rock Falls. Support of CLS was a cause shared by both Hazel and her husband, Ernie. She enjoyed gardening and spending hours in the yard grooming her flowers and shrubs. Most noted were her meticulously pruned roses which lined the driveway of her home. Hazel was a member of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sterling. She passed away with complete confidence in God's grace and promise of eternal life. Hazel was born May 6, 1922 on the family farm in Fairhaven Township. She was the daughter of Emil and Clara (Steinmeyer) Buhrow. She married Ernest Schultz on May 24, 1944 in Sterling. Ernest passed away November 3, 2011. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Kay (Richard) Kurtz, of Scituate, MA; two sons, James Schultz, of Sterling and Lynn Schultz, of Nashua, NH; and one granddaughter, Amy Schultz of Sterling. Hazel is also survived by two brothers; Robert Buhrow and Eugene Buhrow, both of Sterling. In addition to her husband, Hazel was preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie Folkers and Leona Velazquez. Services will be held Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 11 AM at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor David Burge officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM at the Church, prior to services. A memorial has been established to Christ Lutheran School, Sterling. Condolences may be sent to schillingfuneralhome.com.
