Obituary of Elise Matthews

STERLING- Elise Matthews, 84, of Sterling died Sunday January 10, 2016 at Advocate Bromenn Medical Center, Normal. Elise was born in Wichita, Kansas on June 28, 1931, the daughter of Roger and Irma (Klaus) Wrigley. She married Edgar Matthews on August 2, 1953 in Peru, Indiana, he preceded her in death on January 30, 2013. Elise was a graduate of Indiana University, and received her masters from Butler University. Prior to moving to Sterling in 1981, Elise was a school teacher for the Frankfort School District, in Indiana, at Lincoln elementary school. After coming to Sterling, Elise taught nursery school at the YWCA and was active in the Association of University Women(AAUW). She was a member of The Big Red Church in Sterling. Elise enjoyed flowers, and always created beautiful flower gardens where ever she lived. Elise was a caring wife and mother, always enjoying the company of her children and grandchildren. She will be missed by all, but we are comforted in knowing that she is in the presence of our Lord and Savior. Survivors include; one daughter, Sara (John) Blessent, of Bloomington; two sons, Alan Matthews, of Hopkins, Michigan and Jeff Matthews, of Hanover, Indiana; one brother, Alan (Peg) Wrigley of Grand Blanc, Michigan; two grandchildren, Anna and Sam Matthews. Elise was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Vic, Roger and David Wrigley. Funeral services will be on Thursday January 14, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at the Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation, Sterling, with Pastor Jeff Coester, of The Big Red Church, Sterling, officiating. Visitation will be from 1-3:00 p.m. prior to funeral services at the funeral home. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
