Obituary of Marie Porter

MARIE C. PORTER

JACKSONVILLE, ALABAMA-Marie C. Porter, 92, formerly of Sterling, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, April 24, 2017, surrounded by her family.

     Marie was born July 1, 1924 in Holden, WV, the daughter of Robert H. and Lula (Doane) Burgess. Marie was raised in Rich Valley VA., alongside thirteen siblings. Marie was the first of four sets of twins born to the family. She married George M. Porter on June 18, 1949 in Saltville, VA. He preceded her in death on March 3, 2011.

     Survivors include two daughters, Kathy (Thomas-deceased) Jordan and Angela (Bob) White, both of Jacksonville, AL; three sons, Dennis (Joy) Porter of Myrtle Beach, SC, Joseph (Kim) Porter and Kevin (Lisa) Porter both of Sterling; twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Opal (Jack-deceased) Rhea of Saltville, VA, Jean (Bob-deceased) Griffith of Aldie, VA, Jackie (Harry-deceased) Chapman of Wytheville, VA and many cousins, nieces and nephews.     

     She was also preceded in death by both parents; one son Darrell Porter; eight sisters, Katherine, Pauline, Helen, Ruth, Myrtle (twin), Dorothy, Norma and Bernice; four brothers, Charles, Berkley, Julian (at birth) and Robert Burgess; one grandson, Jared Porter and one great-granddaughter, Chassidy Porter.

     Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Sterling, with Jason Borton, pastor of Harvest Time Bible Church, Rock Falls, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling. Visitation will be from 9-11 AM Saturday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Sterling, prior to funeral services.

         Special thanks to Cassie Rush, Alacare Hospice Nurse and the Alacare Hospice Team, Suzanne Adams of RMC Anniston, Jacksonville RMC staff and Jamie, Epiphany and the 5th floor staff at RMC Anniston.

         A memorial has been established to Alacare Hospice 2400 Hawkins Pkwy #104, Birmingham, AL 35244.
