Therapy Dog Walter

At Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation, we know comfort looks different for every family. During times of loss, support can come from kind words, shared memories, and the presence of people who care. Sometimes, though, comfort comes in a quieter way through the gentle companionship of a loyal friend. That is exactly what Walter brings to the families we serve throughout Sterling and the surrounding Sauk Valley communities.

Walter is more than just a familiar face around our funeral home. He is an important part of the care and compassion we provide to families in Sterling, Rock Falls, Dixon, Morrison, Amboy, Fulton, Prophetstown, Polo, Milledgeville, Tampico, and nearby communities. His calm personality and friendly nature help create a sense of peace during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Walter is a half Aussie Doodle, which gives him the perfect combination of intelligence, warmth, and a naturally gentle temperament. He is non-shedding, hypoallergenic, an AKC-certified Canine Good Citizen, and a certified Love on a Leash Therapy Dog. More importantly, he has a natural gift for helping people feel at ease.

Families often meet Walter during arrangement conferences, visitations, funeral services, and memorial gatherings. He has a way of knowing when someone needs a little extra comfort. Whether he is sitting quietly beside someone during a difficult conversation or offering a warm welcome as guests arrive, his presence brings reassurance when words are hard to find.

For children, Walter can make the funeral home feel a little less unfamiliar. Grief can be especially difficult for young family members, and having a friendly, approachable companion nearby often helps them feel safer and more comfortable. For adults, his calm presence can provide a moment of peace during an emotional day. Sometimes a gentle nudge, a wagging tail, or simply having him close by can make all the difference.

At Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation, we believe every service should reflect the life being honored and the people left behind. Personalized care matters, and Walter is one of the many ways we help families feel supported from the moment they walk through our doors. Along with meaningful funeral services, cremation options, and compassionate guidance, he helps us create an environment where healing can begin.

Families in Sterling and throughout Whiteside County trust us to help them through one of life’s hardest seasons, and Walter is proud to be part of that journey. His quiet kindness reflects the heart of what we do every day caring for families with warmth, respect, and genuine compassion.

If you visit us, there is a good chance Walter will be here to greet you. He loves meeting new people, and like many families we serve, you may find that he leaves a lasting impression long after your visit.
