Our mother had a great passion for reading. She spent many hours reading in bed or on the couch, often with a magnifying glass in hand. She especially liked nonfiction or what she called "true stories", but was also known on occasion to read an Agatha Christie mystery. One of her all-time favorite books was Lusitania by Diana Preston. She had a special connection to this ship because her mother immigrated from Sweden on the Lusitania, which was later sunk during WWI by a German U-Boat. Another favorite book along the same lines was Titanic: Triumph & Tragedy by John Eaton, about the famous ship that sank in 1912, a year before Mom was born. She also became fascinated by Timothy Treadwell's book Among Grizzlies, rereading it several times. Other favorite topics included polar explorations, mountain ascents, true crime, disasters, and stories about rural life in Sweden and America. I used to scour used bookstores looking for books that I thought she would like. Before my Dad died I did the same thing for him--but his taste ran to fiction classics like Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Conrad. It was from both of them that I learned to love reading and history. Thank-you! Daughter Lori

My dear friend Joan.....We have been friends since early childhood and I remember coming to your house across from Sinnissippi Park and thinking how beautiful your mother was. Her lovely red hair and ever present smile. However, most of all I remember the times we spent with your family ice skating and tobogganing at the park. I loved watching your parents ice skate together. They were so graceful and I always thought how wonderful it was that they enjoyed skating with each other. They always looked so happy together! Your friend forever, Ann

Mom's mother taught her to garden when she was a little girl. She had her own little garden, with zinnias, nasturtium, asters and carnations. They ate the nasturtium leaves and flowers in salads. Once Mom ordered seeds for a vine she planted at her parents' house. "But it was a horrible, prickly vine and very hard to get rid of!" she told me with a smile. Her father also liked to garden. He planted cannas outside his coal office and put in a rock garden with gold fish at home. The rock garden would turn green with algae, so they put the fish in the bathtub and scrubbed it. At her own home Mom grew tomatoes and peppers until she was in her 90's and always edged her garden with petunias. In recent years, the phlox, yellow daisies, peonies and the rose transplanted from her parents' home continued to bloom. She loved to have bouquets of flowers in the house: she never tired of listing the type, color and number of each flower!

Every Fall, usually in October, I took Mom on a day trip to see the fall colors. We used to go to Galena, but as she got older, shorter trips were in order. We'd go to Palisades State Park in Savanna, or, as in 2009, to Eagle Point Park in Clinton, Iowa, where this photo was taken. Last year, 2010, we went to Rockwood State Park in Morrison, and ate lunch at the cafe there. She loved eating outside on the screened porch overlooking Lake Carlton. I always enjoyed taking Mom on these trips, and she looked forward to them with enjoyment, as she did everything in her life. Your daughter Joan

One of Mom's early memories was of standing on the sidewalk of her parents' house on the day World War I ended in 1918. She remembered her mother crying and all the bells and whistles sounding. She used to say, "I lived through many wars: World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, two wars in Iraq and now Afghanistan." Near the end of World War II our father Lyle was drafted and served at Fort Lewis in Washington, in spite of having 3 kids; my mother took the train out to visit him. While he was gone, he sent her love letters. He picked vegetables in the fields in Washington to send extra money back to the family. In her letters to him she told him about going on outings with the kids, her sister Mibbs and her mother Signe. I used to wonder what it was like to live so long and span so many events and historical changes. To the end of her life, she remained interested in the news & current events. She even liked to watch the Congressional hearings on CNN!

Our Mom loved clouds. No matter where we were going in the car, whether to a doctor appointment, out to eat, or for a drive, she always commented on the clouds. Sometimes there were no clouds in the sky, and she'd comment on that, then she'd notice if clouds had appeared later in the day. She'd point out if a cloud resembled something, like a fish or a face. She appreciated anything beautiful, but clouds were of special interest to her. When my daughter Pam was home recently, I told her about Mom's love of clouds. She ordered a book about clouds, and it arrived in time for me to show Mom the photos in the book one time. I'll always think of Mom whenever I see clouds in the sky. Your loving daughter, Joan

My Mom was very proud of her Swedish heritage. Her mother Signe emigrated from Sweden around 1909 at the age of 19. She had been a servant in Sweden from the age of 12; once in the U.S. she learned English and became a cook in a Swedish-American household in Chicago, where she met my Grandfather when he delivered milk to the house. Ernie Eckman was born in Chicago to Swedish immigrants; his father was a tailor who lost his inventory in the Great Chicago Fire. My grandmother continued many Swedish traditions, such as serving lutefisk on Christmas Eve, with plum pudding & brandy sauce. She & my Mom baked Swedish heirloom cookies and Swedish almond coffee cake with cardamom. Mom only knew a few words of Swedish, such as let "maten tyste mun"--"let the food quiet the mouth." She liked to say a Swedish prayer on holidays. She told stories of Grandma's life in Sweden, including walking miles to school through the snow and gathering mushrooms in the woods. My parents and I spent 5 weeks in Sweden, Denmark & Norway in 1972. We visited the old homestead where grandma grew up near Norrkoping, did genealogical research in Swedish parish records, and saw my great grandparents' graves. Mom's red hair and lovely face reflected her Swedish roots. Daughter Lori

Since she was 3 years old, coffee has been one of my mother's favorite drinks. She liked to repeat the story of how she would beg her mother to take her to "Pee's house, ice cream, coffee, gum!"--meaning a visit to family friends the Peterson's for treats. Before my grandmother died, Mom would visit her for afternoon coffee every day. They would sit in the kitchen of Grandma's house and sip coffee, exchange gossip and sample some of Grandma's baked goods like cinnamon rolls, Swedish coffee cake or Swedish heirloom cookies. As I grew up, I often sat in bed with Mom in the morning and Dad would bring up a tray of coffee for us to share. On my many visits back to Sterling, Mom and I would have coffee at breakfast and talk over afternoon coffee and cookies as she has done with her mother. The last thing she tasted in this world was a small teaspoon of freshly-brewed coffee. Mom, I'll always think of you over coffee! Daughter Lori

"Irene, Lyle and I want you to meet our friend, George Wadsworth, on a date next week." That blind date turned into a 52 year happy marriage and our families have been connected life-long friends to the very end. As time passed I fell in love with the Eshleman family as we ice skated on the bijou, had suppers at their home, listened to Diane choose to play one of my favorites at her concert or have Lyle snap pictures of my class as the years passed. Joan and my sister, Georgia, have also remained life-long friends. Even when Lyle passed away and all the families moved to various corners of the country, Violette and Mom always stayed in touch. Although deep into their 90's, mother's eyes would glow with happiness when she and Violette shared newsy tidbits long distance. I remember Violette as such a vital and entergetic person. And when she smiled her blue eyes just sparkled and I had to smile back. Dad is gone now and Mother passed away earlier this year at 96. I know in my heart of hearts that they all are together now...wrapped in friendship and carried on the wings of shared faith to the Master's Home.
I will remember each of you with love and prayers during your time of loss.

Since she was a little girl, Mom loved kitties. As a child she had a cat named Gullie and one named Mama Cat. In middle age she inherited a well-loved black and white cat named Clark from my sister Diane. When Clark died she decided not to have another cat because she was so sad. That changed about 8 months ago when a little black kitten showed up on her doorstep and made himself at home. Soon he moved indoors, was named Buddy Boy, and became Mom's constant companion. He would curl up in her lap or stretch out between her legs on the sofa. He was easy for her to handle, as he goes limp like a rag doll when picked up. "My Buddy Boy" faithfully snuggled next to her in her last hours.
